John Bell Obituary
DEATH OF A VETERAN STATIONMASTER
On Wednesday there passed away at Newton, Wamphray, Mr. John Bell, retired stationmaster, at the age of 79. A native of Brydekirk, Mr. Bell entered the service of the Caledonian Railway Company when the line was in course of construction. His sterling qualities led to his gradual promotion. In 1863 he was appointed stationmaster at Wamphray, which position he held with satisfaction to all for a period of 29 years. Through failing strength Mr. Bell was constrained to retire three years ago, but had only been unwell for some ten days before his death. In him there passed away almost the last of the original race of stationmasters in the South of Scotland. Mr. Bell's many kindly qualities gained for him the respect of a wide circle of friends, who will hear with regret of his death. Mrs. Bell, five daughters, and a son survive.
