E-mail from Mike Kregness to Jeff Waugh 12/6/2012:

Hello AgainI sure do enjoy your website, I have gleaned several important pieces of
information about my Orr and Rae ancestors from your site.....very nicely done. I have
enclosed a picture of the headstone of my great grandparents, thought you might want it.
They are buried in the Turlock Memorial Park Cemetery in Turlock, CA, I finally managed to
get over there and took this picture. They are John Aitchison Rae and Elizabeth "Lizzie"
Orr.I have taken a lesson from your website on presentation style and I borrowed some of it
for the story I am writing about the Kregness family in America and I took the liberty of
enclosing an excerpt from it about my great grandparents, thought you might be interested. I
have tried to document details of my family with real background documents rather than just
opinion, but I do include stories from the family, the one below was told to me by my Aunt
Louise who is 91 years old and still has a very fine memory, I thought it important to let
the older members of the family explain to us what happened and what was truth.

John Rae was a coal miner. He was working the coalmines in Belt,
Montana in about 1900, to this day there is a road leading away from downtown Belt
called Orr Coulee Road that is still used and was so named
because of the Orr Family and their mining operation. In 1910 the Rae family
was living in Coal Mining Camp #3, where John is working a strip mine, the mine
is in Fergus County and the mine is close to Lewistown, Montana. John’s next
move was as a coalmine entrepreneur in Roundup, Montana; which brings to mind a
family story about the independent Lizzie.  It was about 1911. John went to Roundup alone,
to set-up mining operations and get things kicked-off the best way possible. Lizzie
had a problem with that; it was taking a long time, too long as far as she was
concerned. Lizzie had been told to keep the home fires burning in Lewistown and
wait for John to call for her; that didn’t work so well, at least not for her, she wanted to
      be with her husband.
Lonely Lizzie, hired a driver, tossed the kids into the back of a covered
wagon, hitched up the horses and went across the open prairie, just like in the
days of the old west, looking for John. When Lizzie arrived in Roundup and
presented herself and the kids to John, the famous response was: “Goddammit,
Lizzie, I told you to stay home and wait until I sent for you”; it was unusual for John to
raise his voice to his wife in a strident way. Louise Kregness Ahern, their granddaughter
adds to this story: Lizzie hired a driver, and it took a
few days to travel across country in a wagon; at night, the driver slept on the ground under
      the wagon. Roundup
was a town just starting out and had very poor accommodations; so, Lizzie and
the kids lived in a boarding house while their house was being built. Roundup
was regarded as a very nice small town and was very appealing to people in those
days, as a great place to live. Because of the appeal of Roundup John’s girls,
Pearl and Janet would meet the Kregness’, i.e. Odin and Harold, their future husbands, who
      were in
Roundup looking for better opportunities themselves; just like the Rae’s.

John and Lizzie stayed in Roundup quite a long time and they
are still there in 1920, John is still working in the mines and Lizzie is a
homemaker at 215 First Avenue West.

Wyoming mining operations were expanding rapidly and 1930 has
John and Lizzie living in Gebo, Wyoming where John has signed on as the Mine
Boss, obviously his employer was taking advantage of John’s years of experience
and knowledge. By 1940 John and Lizzie have retired, and they have earned it,
they established their retirement home in Modesto, CA on Spencer Street next to the daughter
Janet Kregness. John passed away 16 Sep
1946 and was interred in the Turlock Memorial Park Cemetery, Turlock, CA.  Lizzie passed
away 27 May 1953 and was laid
      to rest next to John.
