Immigration: Jock officially arrived in the US at the port of Port Angeles, Washington on June 21, 1946 on the SS Iroquois from British Columbia. The certificate of arrival # is 1300-K-14347 (A6327551) He filed his Declaration of Intent to become a US citizen on August 29, 1947, # 122938 (or 6?) in San Francisco. He stated his occupation as student, and his current address as 3931 Grand Ave., Oakland. On November 5, 1952 he filed a Petition for Naturalization in San Francisco # 100095. He listed his occupation as school principal, and his address as 3931 Grand Ave., Oakland. Archabald and Lena Duffin of 1009 Pearl Street, signed as witnesses. His petition was granted on list # 2472, certificate # 7095975.

Jock's first teaching job was in Ocean Falls, BC. He also taught in Powell River and Nanaimo (Harwood School).

When Jock was a graduate student in education at UC Berkeley (he was in the PhD program) he lived in a rooming house on Haste Street (now People's Park). He taught math at Piedmont High School for a year while he was a student.

John ("Jock") moved to California in 1950 after the death of Winnie. After his marriage to Joy Russell (1951), he lived in Boonville, Mendocino County until Joy's death from polio in 1954. He was the Leggett High School principal and also taught senior math. He moved to Danville (155 (?) Gil Blas Road) in about 1954. He had a house built at 110 Easy Street, Alamo in about 1957 where he lived until his retirement in 1969. He then moved to Fanny Bay, British Columbia where he lived until his death in 1980. Jock owned some land ("the ranch") in Lake County, California with his sisters, Christina and Violet Waugh. They owned about 40 acres south of Lower Lake on the east side of the highway. While married to Winnie, he built a small cabin on the beach on some property he owned at Douglas Bay near Powell River.

Jock told a story about his decision to quit university when he was about 18 or 19 and go to work in the mines in Nanaimo. His father arranged for a job for him in the mines (and made sure it was the hardest, dirtiest job there was). After one day as a coal miner, Jock went back to school and never spoke of quitting again. His father, "the Joker" John Waugh said it was the last his son would ever see of the inside of a coal mine. When Jock's son Jeff worked in a logging camp one summer while home from university, Jock was tickled that Jeff's job assignment was on the "green chain", which was the hardest, dirtiest job in the logging camp...

Jock was an athlete in his younger days. He played basketball, rugby, and soccer in high school, and lettered in soccer at University of British Columbia. He coached Powell River High School (BC) boys basketball to a provincial championship in the late 1930's. He was asked to play on the soccer team at UC Berkeley when he came as a grad student, but decided that 40 was too old to be playing soccer with 20 year olds.

Jock enjoyed fishing, hunting and travelling. He travelled in Europe with Glenda and Greg from about November 1977-January 1978. They rented an apartment in Arcachon, France near Bordeaux for the first month, then drove to Venice when they took a ship to Alexandria, Egypt. They travelled in Egypt for about 6 weeks and then Jock flew back to Canada. Jock had tried several times to be stationed in Egypt during WWII and was thrilled to finally get to see Egypt.

Jock owned a small boat with an outboard motor which he kept at the pier in Fanny Bay. He enjoyed taking the boat out to fish for salmon and cod. He also had a beautiful garden of both flowers and vegetables in Alamo and in Fanny Bay.

Jock often spent the winters in warmer climates. He first went to Arizona for the winters with his sisters Violet and Chrissie, and then later to Mexico by himself. He spent a few winters in Keno Bay in a little rented cabin on the beach. He would take his little white toy poodle, Toni, with him. Jock's sisters, Violet and Chrissie, lived with him from about 1955 on. Violet came to act as housekeeper and to care for Glenda and Jeff. Chrissie came when she left her husband, Frank Adamson.

Jock was 6 ft tall and about 200-220 lbs most of his life.

Jock Waugh and Winnie Russell were married on June 29, 1938, in Powell River, British Columbia Canada. They had one daughter: Glenda (born 1950).

Jock Waugh applied to enlist in the RCAF aircrew in Oct, 1941, but was found "not qualified medically" due to a hernia. On June 6, 1943, he re-applied and was recommended for Non-Pilot Navigation Instructor or Education Officer. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on November 29, 1943, as an Officer Cadet with rank of Sergeant and was immediately transferred to Lachine, Quebec, and then on to Dunnville, Ontario for training. His father (John "the Joker" Waugh) died on December 3, 1943.

The Dunnville Airport, then designated as Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) No. 6 SFTS, Dunnville, was a single-engine school for advanced flying training for allied fighter pilots during World War II.

In May, 1944, Jock Waugh was promoted to the rank of Flying Officer. On January 4, 1945, he was transferred to Moncton, New Brunswick for a further transfer overseas where he was stationed in Bournemouth and Odiham, England and Brussells, Belgium. His military records indicate that he embarked for the UK from Halifax, Nova Scotia on Jan 30 and disembarked in Greenock, UK on Feb 8, 1945.

Jock Waugh was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. The Canadian Volunteer Service Medal is granted to persons of any rank in the Naval, Military or Air Forces of Canada who voluntarily served on Active Service and had honourably completed eighteen months ( 540 days) total voluntary service between September 3, 1939 to March 1, 1947. Winnie Russell died on Nov 1, 1950, in Oakland, California, at the age of 37.

Jock Waugh married Violet Joy "Bunty" Russell (Winnie's sister) on July 4, 1951, in Oakland, California. They had one son: Jeff (born 1952).

Joy Russell died in Santa Rosa, California on April 24, 1954, from complications resulting from a polio infection during the 1954 epidemic in California. Jock moved to Danville, California that summer. Jock would become Superintendent of the Alamo School District.

The Waugh Family moved from Danville to Alamo, California, in the summer of 1958. Jock retired in 1968 and returned to Vancouver Island where he lived in Fanny Bay until his death.

Jock Waugh died on June 13, 1980, in Comox, British Columbia, and was cremated in Nanaimo, B.C.
